Common Kitchen Renovation Mistakes

It’s finally time to give that kitchen a fresh new look. You may have some big ideas when it comes to remodeling your kitchen, but don’t go overboard! You want a modern, updated kitchen that’s also functional and done at a price that meets your budget. Here’s a few common kitchen renovation mistakes that you want to avoid.

  1. Decide what you want, and what you can afford.

It’s easy to have a ton of great ideas for what you want your kitchen to look like, but in reality you probably can’t afford everything that’s on your wish list. Create a list of what you want to update, what’s fine as is and start doing some price comparisons. It’s perfectly normal to dream big, but don’t overdo it.

  1. You can’t do it all by yourself.

If you’re thinking that you can save time and money by doing all of the remodeling work yourself, you might want to think again (unless, of course, if you’re a licensed contractor). If you want a remodel that looks professional, you need to hire the right professionals. Do your homework first before you hire someone, though: check out local contractors’ websites online, get references, referrals and estimates and read reviews of their work before you decide.

  1. No remodel is perfect.

It’s nice to think that everything in your remodeling job will run smoothly, but as most of us know, nothing is ever perfect. Sometimes there are delays in ordering and material delivery, unexpected repairs, you name it. Have a realistic time frame of when your project should be completed.

  1. Never pay the total cost until the project is done.

Most contractors require a down payment for their work. That’s just fine, especially if they’re the ones that are ordering materials and appliances, but there’s no need for you to pay for the entire project before it’s even started. If something should go wrong, or if the contractor has to back out of the project, all of a sudden you’re out a lot of money! Get everything in writing before the job begins.
